Window Tint & Paint Protection Film in Wilton, NY
Upstate Tint & PPF is our Wilton shop at 12 Commerce Park Dr, Unit C, and it does two jobs: car window tinting and paint protection film. Tint cuts heat and glare through the glass, and film takes the stone chips that would otherwise go into the paint on your front end. New York limits how dark the glass can go, so we go over what's legal on your exact vehicle before any film is ordered.

The Difference
Why Wilton drivers book Upstate Tint & PPF
Glass and paint are two different films, and both go on at the same Wilton shop.
Tint and film under one roof
Window tint on the glass and paint protection film on the front end can be planned as one drop-off at 12 Commerce Park Dr, Unit C.
Legal limits checked first
Before any window film is ordered, we check it against New York's light transmission rules for your vehicle. Your car still has to pass inspection.
Coverage you choose
Paint protection film goes where you want it: a partial front, a full front, or single panels like rockers, mirrors and door edges.
Heat, glare and stone chips on Wilton cars
Wilton sits along Route 50 and Exit 16 of I-87, so a lot of the cars that come through the shop do Northway miles. Stones come off trucks at highway speed, and the leading edge of the hood and the front bumper take most of them. That's the area paint protection film in Saratoga Springs and here in Wilton is for.
The glass is the other half. A car that sits in an open lot along the retail corridor all afternoon soaks up heat through the windows, and getting back into it is the part most people want fixed. Trim and upholstery fading on whichever side faces the sun is another reason people ask about tint. Wilton also has a lot of newer cars and leases, and owners here tend to be thinking about resale, which makes protecting the paint before the first chips the sensible conversation.
What New York allows on your windows
The New York DMV's tinted windows page cites Section 375 (12-a) of the Vehicle and Traffic Law. The windshield and the front side windows must let at least 70% of outside light through. The rule covers the rear window as well, unless the vehicle has outside rear-view mirrors on both sides that give the driver a full, clear view behind.
The rear side windows depend on the vehicle. If it's a sedan, coupe, hatchback, hardtop, convertible or station wagon, the rear sides need at least 70% too. The DMV says a vehicle counts as one of those when the Federal ID label on the left front door panel reads "Passenger Car," so that label is the first thing we check on your car. SUVs, trucks and vans aren't in that list, which is why their rear sides can go darker. Our guide to New York's window tint law goes through it window by window.

Paint protection film and how much to cover
Film is clear urethane with real thickness, so when a stone hits it, the film deforms and soaks up the energy that would have chipped the paint. A ceramic coating is microns thick and can't do that, which is why a lot of cars get film on the front impact zones and a coating over everything else.
A partial front (bumper and part of the hood) covers the area that takes the most hits for the least money. A full front adds the whole hood, both front fenders and the mirrors, and gets rid of the film line across the middle of the hood. Past that you can add rocker panels, door edges and the area behind the rear wheels. We walk the car with you and agree where every edge will sit before any film is cut.

More about window film choice, fitting and curing
Darker doesn't mean cooler. Dyed film is the cheapest and doesn't do much about heat. Metallic film rejects more heat but can interfere with phone and radio reception. Ceramic film rejects the most heat for a given darkness and doesn't touch the signal, which is why it costs more. There's a longer comparison in carbon vs ceramic window tint.
Old tint takes heat and patience to get off. Rear glass is the risky part, since careless removal lifts and breaks the defroster lines. Once new tint is fitted it takes days to fully cure, depending on the weather, and we'll tell you when the windows can go down.
Paint protection film edges are wrapped around and bonded on the back of the panel wherever the panel allows, so there's no exposed border to collect dirt. It needs curing time before the first wash, and how long depends on the film. After that you wash it like paint, and light swirls in the top layer close up with heat on most modern films.
Window tint vs. paint protection film
Two different films for two different jobs. Plenty of cars get both.
| Window tint | Paint protection film | |
|---|---|---|
| Goes on | The glass | The paint |
| What it does | Cuts heat and glare through the windows | Absorbs stone strikes that would chip the clear coat |
| Rules to check | New York's 70% light rule, set by vehicle type | None, you choose which panels get covered |
| Priced by | The film you pick and the vehicle | The vehicle and how much of it you cover |
Watch For These
Signs it's time for tint or film
A car that bakes in the sun, or a front end starting to chip, is the usual reason people call.
- Getting into the car after it's sat in the sun is miserable
- Glare from low sun or oncoming headlights on your commute
- Old tint that's gone purple or started bubbling and lifting
- Chips already starting along the front bumper and hood edge
- A newer vehicle you plan to keep, or to sell with the paint intact

Our Process
How a tint or PPF job works in Wilton
Every job starts with the rules for your vehicle and the panels you want covered, then the fit and the cure.
- Step : 01
Check the law and plan coverage
We go over what New York allows on your glass and agree exactly which panels get film.
- Step : 02
Choose the film
Window films vary in how much heat they reject, and the price follows. We explain the difference instead of just naming a brand.
- Step : 03
Prep and fit indoors
The glass gets a proper clean and the paint gets decon before film goes on, since film locks in whatever is under it.
- Step : 04
Cure and inspect
We check the edges and tell you when the windows can go down and when the car can be washed.

Great guy. He will take care of you and your car. I usually wash my own car but when I need an expert for a good wash, ceramic coating and stuff he’s my guy. Always kills it

Good to Know
Questions about window tint and PPF in Wilton
Start here for pricing, timing and booking details.
How dark can I tint my car windows in Wilton, NY?
Wilton follows New York State law. The windshield and front side windows must let at least 70% of outside light through, under Section 375 (12-a) of the Vehicle and Traffic Law. Sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, hardtops, convertibles and station wagons have the same limit on the rear side windows. The rear window can be darker when the car has outside mirrors on both sides. We confirm which rule fits your vehicle before we fit anything.
Where is the Wilton shop?
Upstate Tint & PPF is at 12 Commerce Park Dr, Unit C, Wilton, NY 12831. Call (518) 851-8240 to set a drop-off time, since tint and film are both fitted indoors.
Do you put paint protection film and tint on the same car?
Yes. Film goes on the paint and tint goes on the glass, so they don't get in each other's way. If you want both, tell us when you book and we plan the drop-off around the two jobs.
How much do window tint and PPF cost in Wilton?
Both are quote-based. For tint, the film you pick drives most of the price, and ceramic costs more than dyed because it rejects the most heat for a given darkness. For paint protection film it depends on the vehicle and how much of it you cover, and a partial front is a very different job from a full front. Send the year, make and model and we'll quote it.
Is PPF the same thing as a clear bra?
Yes. Clear bra is the older name for paint protection film. It's the same clear urethane layer over the paint, and we quote it the same way, by the vehicle and how much of it gets covered.
Will tinted windows fail inspection?
They can. Tint is examined during the New York State inspection, so film darker than the law allows on your vehicle is a problem at your next inspection, and installing it isn't legal either. That's why we check the rule for your exact vehicle before ordering film.
