Heat and glare on a car parked in Albany

Wikipedia's climate data for Albany describes hot, humid summers, with 90 degrees or more on about nine days a year, and roughly 2,360 hours of sunshine across a year. A car that sits all day in an open lot or on the street through that soaks it up, and getting back into it at the end of the day is the part most people want fixed. A deck keeps the sun off the glass, but plenty of Albany cars don't get a deck spot. Our page on auto detailing in Albany covers the rest of what that parking does to a car.

Good film cuts the heat coming through the glass, which you notice most on the seats and the steering wheel. It also takes the edge off glare, and in an Albany winter the sun sits low for much of the commute. Trim and upholstery fading on whichever side of the car faces the sun while it's parked is another reason people ask about window tinting.

Old tint is its own job. Dyed film fades to purple over a few years and starts bubbling and lifting, and taking it off is done slowly, especially around the rear defroster lines, before anything new goes on.

What New York allows on your windows

The New York DMV's tinted windows page cites Section 375 (12-a) of the Vehicle and Traffic Law. The windshield and the front side windows can't block more than 30% of the light, which is the same thing as saying at least 70% of outside light has to pass through. The rule covers the rear window as well, unless the vehicle has outside rear-view mirrors on both sides that give the driver a full, clear view behind.

The rear side windows depend on the vehicle. If it's a sedan, coupe, hatchback, hardtop, convertible or station wagon, the rear sides need at least 70% too. The DMV says a vehicle counts as one of those when the Federal ID label on the left front door panel reads "Passenger Car," so that label is the first thing we check on your car. SUVs, trucks and vans aren't in that list, which is why their rear sides can go darker.

Tint is examined during the state inspection, and the DMV also says it's illegal to install glass that doesn't comply. So a shade that fails inspection isn't a favor to anyone, and we won't fit one. Drivers with certain medical conditions can apply to the DMV for an exemption with form MV-80W. That's between you and the DMV, and if you have one, bring it when you book.

Choosing the film and fitting it

Darker doesn't mean cooler. Dyed film is the cheapest and doesn't do much about heat. Metallic film rejects more heat but can interfere with phone and radio reception. Ceramic film rejects the most heat for a given darkness and doesn't touch the signal, which is why it costs more. We explain the difference instead of just naming a brand, and there's a longer comparison in carbon vs ceramic window tint.

Fitting is indoor work, because dust is the main problem, and a car that's been parked downtown in Albany collecting construction dust is a good example of why. The glass gets a proper clean, then the film is cut and fitted. So tint isn't something we do at the curb or in a deck in Albany. We set the drop-off with you when you book.

Film takes a few days to fully cure, depending on the weather. We'll tell you when the windows can go down. If you're having other work done at the same time, ceramic coating in Albany is the other job that needs the car indoors, so the two can be planned together.

Questions about window tinting in Albany

Start here for pricing, timing, care and booking details.

How dark can I tint my car windows in Albany, NY?

Albany follows New York State law. The windshield and front side windows must let at least 70% of outside light through, under Section 375 (12-a) of the Vehicle and Traffic Law. Sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, hardtops, convertibles and station wagons have the same limit on the rear side windows. The rear window can be darker when the car has outside mirrors on both sides. We confirm which rule fits your vehicle before we fit anything.

Will tinted windows fail inspection in Albany?

They can. Tint is examined during the New York State inspection, so film darker than the law allows on your vehicle is a problem at your next inspection, and installing it isn't legal either. That's why we check the rule for your exact vehicle before ordering film.

Can you tint my windows where my car is parked in Albany?

No. Fitting is indoor work, because dust is the main problem, and a street, lot or deck in Albany can't keep the glass clean while film goes on. We set the drop-off with you when you book.

How much does window tinting cost for an Albany car?

It's quote-based, and the film you pick drives most of the price. Ceramic costs more than dyed because it rejects the most heat for a given darkness. Send the year, make and model and we'll quote it.

How long before I can roll the windows down after tinting in Albany?

Film takes a few days to fully cure, and the weather changes how long. We'll tell you when the windows can go down on your car.
