What you are actually looking at
Stand next to a dark car in direct sun and the fine circular scratches show up as a haze, sometimes described as spiderwebbing. Those marks are in the clear coat, not the colour, and almost all of them came from washing. Automatic washes with brushes are the biggest single cause; a dirty wash mitt and a single bucket are close behind.
Because the scratches are irregular, they scatter light in every direction instead of reflecting it cleanly. That scattering is what reads to the eye as dull, flat or faded. The colour underneath is usually fine. Level the clear coat and the depth comes back.
Measured, not guessed
Correction removes clear coat. That is how it works and there is no version of it that does not. Which is exactly why we measure first, taking depth readings across the panels so we know what we are working with before anything spins.
We then run a test section to find the least aggressive combination of pad and compound that actually clears the defects. Starting gentle and stepping up preserves material. Starting aggressive because it is faster costs you clear coat you will never get back, and on a car that has been polished before there may not be much spare.
What will not come out
If a scratch catches your fingernail, it has gone through the clear coat. Polishing cannot fill it, and removing enough material to level it would take off more than is safe. We can often reduce how much it catches the light, but we will tell you plainly that it is staying.
The same applies to deep etching from bird droppings left too long, and to sanding marks from previous bodywork. We walk the car with you under proper lighting before we start and point out which marks are coming out and which are not, so nobody is surprised at handover.

Will every scratch come out?
No. If a scratch catches your fingernail, it is through the clear coat and polishing will not remove it — we can improve how it looks, but removing it would mean taking off more clear coat than is safe. We will show you which marks are which before we start.
Does correction damage the paint?
It removes a small, controlled amount of clear coat, which is why measuring matters. Done properly and infrequently, that is well within what the factory finish can spare. Done repeatedly by someone not measuring, it is not.
How long does it take?
It depends entirely on the condition of the paint and the size of the vehicle. We give you a realistic window when we have seen the car, not before.
Should I get a coating afterwards?
It is worth considering, because correction resets the finish and a coating is what keeps it that way. There is no obligation to bundle them.
Is this the same as buffing?
Same family, different intent. Correction is a measured, multi-stage process aimed at removing defects. A quick buff is usually one pass with a filler polish that looks good until it rains.
