How to get bird droppings, tree sap and bugs off car paint

Bird droppings, dead bugs and tree sap all damage car paint if they are left on, and all three come off safely with water, patience and a soft cloth. Mazda's owner's manual says droppings contain acids that can eat into the clear coat, bugs form corrosive compounds as they break down, and sap hardens until it bonds to the finish.

Below is what Mazda and Consumer Reports tell owners to do, why warm weather in Saratoga Springs makes it more urgent, and what happens when a mark stays behind after cleaning.

Why do these three damage paint?

DepositWhat the sources say happens
Bird droppingsMazda: they contain acids that can eat away the clear and color base coat if not removed. Consumer Reports: they shrink as they dry and put stress on the finish.
BugsMazda: as insects decompose on the paint, corrosive compounds form that can erode the clear and color coat. Consumer Reports: the decomposing material can etch some finishes.
Tree sapMazda: it hardens and adheres permanently, and scratching it off while hard can take paint with it. Consumer Reports: as drops shrink they stress the finish, which can crack it.

Consumer Reports also notes that newer clear coats resist chemical attack better than paint from 20 years ago. Better does not mean immune, so the advice is the same for a new car.

How do I remove bird droppings without scratching the paint?

Mazda's manual says droppings can be removed with a soft sponge and water, and that a moistened tissue may do the job if you are away from home. The cleaned spot should then be waxed.

Mazda also lists washing without first rinsing off dirt, and washing with a rough, dry or dirty cloth, as ways the paint gets scratched. So wet the spot first, let it soften, and lift it off instead of scrubbing a dry dropping across the panel.

How do I get tree sap and bugs off?

  • Wash the area first. Consumer Reports says this clears the grit and grime from the spot you are about to work on.
  • Soften it. Mazda says to remove insects and sap with a soft sponge and water or a commercial cleaner, or by laying dampened newspaper over the spot for 1 to 2 hours and then rinsing the loosened debris off with water.
  • If sap is still there, Consumer Reports suggests rubbing alcohol on a cloth as the first thing to try, then a tree sap or bug and tar remover from an auto parts or hardware store.
  • Test any product on a small spot first. Consumer Reports says discoloration or streaking means it is harming the finish. Use it in the shade and in small amounts.
  • Wash the area with soap and water straight after, then wax it. Consumer Reports warns that these removers can strip the protection off along with the sap.

Never pick at hard sap with a fingernail, a razor or a scraper. That is exactly the case Mazda warns can pull paint off with it.

Why does it matter more in a Saratoga Springs summer?

Consumer Reports quotes its Auto Test Center chief mechanic: heat speeds up how firmly sap sticks to paint, and it will eventually eat through the paint, "especially as the days warm up." Here is how warm it gets locally, from the NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals for the Saratoga Springs 4 SW station.

MonthAverage daily highDays reaching 80°F or more
May72.5°F7.5
June79.9°F16.6
July83.8°F24.6
August82.1°F21.9
September74.9°F8.6

From June through August most days reach 80°F or more. A dropping or a smear of sap on a dark hood in July is one to deal with right away, before the next wash. Consumer Reports also suggests not parking under trees that drip sap, such as pines, when you have a choice.

What if a mark is still there after cleaning?

A dull patch or a faint outline where a dropping sat is usually etching in the clear coat, and washing will not lift it. Machine polishing levels the clear coat, which is how surface defects come out. Deep etching from a dropping left on too long may not come out fully, because leveling it would take off more clear coat than is safe. Our paint correction starts with paint depth readings for that reason, and we walk the car with you under good light to point out what will come out and what will not.

If the whole car needs attention rather than one spot, that is a job for car detailing in Saratoga Springs: a proper wash and decontamination first, then any polishing, then protection on top.

How do I keep it from happening again?

Keep a layer of protection on the paint and clean deposits off quickly. Mazda tells owners to keep the car washed and waxed and to do it as soon as possible after a deposit lands. Consumer Reports says its tests found wax lasts only a few weeks, so it recommends waxing at least once a season. Mazda also says to wash the car thoroughly and frequently, at least once a month, with lukewarm or cold water.

Common questions

Start here for the practical questions that come up most often.

How fast should bird droppings come off a car?

As soon as you can. Mazda's owner's manual says bird droppings contain acids that can eat away the clear coat and color coat if they are not removed, and Consumer Reports says not to let sap or droppings sit for days.

Can I scrape tree sap off with a fingernail or a razor?

No. Mazda's manual says tree sap hardens and bonds to the finish, and that scratching it off while it is hard can take some paint with it. Soften it first with water, a damp cover or a sap remover.

Is rubbing alcohol safe on car paint?

Consumer Reports suggests rubbing alcohol on a cloth as the first thing to try on sap. Test any cleaner on a small spot first, use as little as you need, then wash the area with soap and water and wax it.

Will a mark left by a bird dropping polish out?

Machine polishing levels the clear coat, which is how surface defects come out. Deep etching from a dropping left on too long may not come out fully, because leveling it would remove more clear coat than is safe. We measure paint depth and show you what will and will not come out before we start.

Does wax or a coating stop bird droppings from damaging paint?

It helps. Mazda tells owners to wax the spot after cleaning it, and Consumer Reports says wax lasts only a few weeks in its tests, so it recommends waxing at least once a season. Either way the dropping still has to come off quickly.
