Boat & Marine Detailing
Gelcoat is not automotive paint and does not behave like it. It oxidises — the surface goes chalky and colour transfers onto a cloth when you wipe it — and a season on the water leaves a waterline stain that ordinary washing will not shift. Correcting gelcoat takes different compounds and a different approach, and a marine ceramic coating afterwards is what slows the oxidation coming back.

Gelcoat is not paint
Gelcoat is a pigmented resin surface and it fails differently from automotive clear coat. Rather than scratching, it oxidises: the surface breaks down under UV into a chalky layer that has no gloss and transfers colour onto a cloth when you wipe it.
That difference changes the whole approach. Compounds, pads and the amount of material you can safely remove are all different. Gelcoat is thicker than clear coat, which gives more to work with, but heavily oxidised gelcoat on a hull that has sat uncovered for several seasons still has limits and we will tell you where they are.
The waterline and the staining nobody mentions
The stained band along the waterline is its own job and it needs its own treatment. It is usually a mix of mineral deposits, algae staining and whatever else is in the water the boat sits in, and none of it comes off with ordinary washing.
Left long enough it etches into the gelcoat rather than sitting on it, at which point removal becomes a correction job rather than a cleaning one. Dealing with it at haul-out rather than next spring is considerably cheaper.
Protecting it afterwards
A marine-grade ceramic coating is formulated for constant UV and water exposure, which is a harsher environment than any car sees. It slows the return of oxidation and makes the seasonal wash-down substantially easier.
Either end of the season works for the job. Before launch the boat goes in protected; before storage it goes away clean, which is the version we would recommend if you are choosing, because oxidation does not pause over winter.
