Film makers say window tint needs a few days before the windows can go down and up to a couple of weeks to cure fully, depending on the film and the climate. XPEL says to wait about 1 to 5 days before rolling windows down or cleaning them. At Upstate Auto Detailing, we tell you when yours can go down.
Saratoga Springs is cold for much of the year, and climate is one of the things the film makers tie cure time to. Our window tinting in Saratoga Springs page covers the rest of the job.
How many days until the windows can be lowered?
The film makers do not all give the same number, so here they are side by side.
| Source | What it says |
|---|---|
| XPEL, product care | Wait about 1 to 5 days after installation before rolling down or cleaning the windows, depending on the climate. Haze or moisture bubbles can show for up to ten days. |
| Madico, care guide | Keep the windows up for the first two to four days. Rolling them down early could cause the tint to peel. Check with the film manufacturer for your product. |
| International Window Film Association | Curing typically takes from a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on the film type and conditions. Avoid rolling the windows down while it cures. |
Treat those as ranges. None of them gives a separate figure for a New York winter, and the right answer depends on the film on your car. We tell you when yours can go down.

Does cold weather slow window tint curing in Saratoga Springs?
XPEL ties its waiting time to climate, and the IWFA says cure time depends on the film type and environmental conditions. Neither publishes a winter number. What we can add is how often it is cold here. These are the NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals for the Saratoga Springs 4 SW station, about 4 miles from our shop.
| Month | Average daily low | Days with a low at or below 32°F |
|---|---|---|
| November | 30.8°F | 18.1 |
| December | 21.6°F | 27.0 |
| January | 14.3°F | 28.7 |
| February | 16.0°F | 26.0 |
| March | 24.8°F | 24.1 |
For comparison, the July average high is 83.8°F. A tint job from November to March lands in months when most nights fall to freezing or below. The sources do not say how much that slows the cure, so we do not guess a number. The film makers' ranges are the starting point.
What is normal while the film cures?
Some haze or small water pockets while it cures is normal. XPEL says haze or moisture bubbles can show for up to ten days, and that they clear once the moisture used to apply the film has dried. If something has not cleared after that, call the shop that fitted the film.
What should I avoid in the first days?
- Keep the windows up. Madico and the IWFA both say so, and Madico warns the tint could peel if they go down early.
- Hold off on cleaning the glass. XPEL says to wait about 1 to 5 days, and Madico says to wait until the film has bonded to the glass.
- Once you do clean it, use a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. The IWFA says to avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive materials that could damage the film.
If you are also booking an interior and exterior detail, tell us when you book. The glass is part of an interior and exterior detail, so ask when the inside of freshly filmed glass can be cleaned.
Will new tint still pass a New York inspection?
Curing does not change the law. The windshield, except the top six inches, and the front side windows have to let at least 70% of outside light through. The DMV says inspections have examined tinted windows since January 1, 2017, and that it is illegal to sell, offer for sale or install glass that does not comply. We check your vehicle against those rules first, and our guide to New York's window tint law goes through it window by window. Driving in from Rensselaer County? See window tinting for Troy drivers.
