Window tinting for Troy, NY drivers is done at the Upstate Auto Detailing shop at 40 North Street in Saratoga Springs, about 25 miles in a straight line from the middle of Troy. We fit film indoors, so the car comes to us. Before any film is ordered, we check what New York allows on your vehicle.

Troy is on our service area list, and most of our work there is detailing by van. Tint is the exception, so here is how the trip works.

Does Upstate tint cars from Troy?

Yes, with one condition: the car comes to the shop. Dust is the main problem with fitting film, so tint goes on indoors at 40 North Street and is not a job for a parking spot in Troy. Window tinting in Troy is listed with the other eight services on our Troy page, and the film choices, old-tint removal and curing are covered on the window tinting in Saratoga Springs page.

The shop is about 25 miles from Troy. We got that figure from the U.S. Census Bureau's place coordinates for the City of Troy and the shop's pin on Google Maps. It is a straight line, so the drive is longer, and how much longer depends on the route and the hour.

What does New York's tint rule mean for a Troy car?

The windshield and the front side windows have to let at least 70% of outside light through, and the windshield can carry darker material only on its top six inches. New York inspections have examined tinted windows since January 1, 2017, and the DMV says it is illegal to sell, offer for sale or install glass that does not comply. So we check your vehicle against the law first.

The rear windows depend on the body type on your door label. Our guide to New York's window tint law goes window by window, including the medical exemption.

What film suits a car that lives on a Troy street?

Many Troy residents park on the street with no driveway, so the car sits in whatever sun and glare the block gives it. Film cuts the heat coming through the glass and takes some of the edge off glare. For the heat side, the NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals for the Troy Lock and Dam station put the average July daily high at 85.6°F, with about five days in July at 90°F or above.

FilmHeat rejectionTrade-off
DyedLittle help with heatLowest price, and it turns purple within a few years
MetallicMore heat rejection than dyedMay affect phone and radio signal
CeramicMost heat rejection at any given shadeHigher price, and the signal is left alone

Darker does not mean cooler. A ceramic film at a legal, fairly light shade can beat a dark dyed film on heat and still pass inspection. Our post on carbon vs ceramic window tint compares the options in more detail.

What does the trip to Saratoga Springs involve?

2. Ask for a quotePhone (518) 363-6812, or use the quote form and give us the year, make and model. We quote once we have seen the vehicle.
3. We check New York's limitsWe go through what New York allows on your car.
4. Bring the car to 40 North StreetFitting happens indoors. The glass is cleaned first and the film is cut to it.
5. Keep the windows upCuring takes days, so the windows stay up until we say otherwise. Our post on window tint cure time compares what the film makers say.

What should I send for a window tint quote from Troy?

Give us the year, make and model, which windows you want done and whether old tint has to come off. Price is by quote because the vehicle, the windows, the film and any removal all change the job. Old tint takes heat and patience to get off, and the rear glass needs the most care because careless removal can lift and break the defroster lines.
