Can window tinting stop low winter sun glare in Ballston Spa?

Window tinting in Ballston Spa takes some of the edge off low winter sun, but less than most people expect, because New York keeps the glass in front of the driver light. On the shortest day of the year the sun is only about 5 degrees above the horizon at 8 a.m. here, low enough to sit right under the visor. Upstate Auto Detailing fits film to New York's limits, and those limits decide how much of that light film can touch.

How low the sun sits over Ballston Spa in winter

We ran the NOAA solar position equations for the village's Census coordinates, 43.006 N and 73.854 W. On December 21, 2026 the sun comes up at about 7:24 a.m., tops out near 24 degrees around 11:54 a.m. and is down by about 4:24 p.m. In late June the same sun climbs past 70 degrees at midday.

Those are commute hours. Route 67 splits off east toward the Northway at Malta, so a December run out of the village before 9 puts that low southeast sun ahead and off to the right. Coming back up Route 50 on Milton Avenue toward Saratoga Springs late in the afternoon, it's behind you and to the left, and it lands in the mirrors.

What New York lets you tint

New York Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 375, subdivision 12-a, sets the line at 70% light transmittance for the windshield and the front side windows. The windshield can carry darker material only on its uppermost six inches. The DMV's tinted windows page adds that the rear side windows also have to pass 70% on a car whose Federal ID label on the driver's door reads Passenger Car, and that the rear window follows the same rule unless the car has outside mirrors on both sides.

Put that next to the table. A sun 3 to 10 degrees up comes in low through the windshield, under where a six-inch strip sits for most people, though it depends how high you sit. The glass that low sun actually hits is the glass the law keeps light, so film there won't stop it.

Where film does help

The rear window is the big one. Most cars have mirrors on both sides, so the back glass can go darker, and that's the glass behind you on the late-afternoon drive north up Milton Avenue when the sun is bouncing off the rear-view mirror.

If your door label says something other than Passenger Car, which is common on SUVs, pickups and minivans, the rear side window rule in 12-a doesn't list your body type. That opens up more of the back of the vehicle, so we read the label first.

UV is the other reason to film the front windows even at a legal, light shade. The Skin Cancer Foundation says most windshields are laminated and already block almost all UV, while most side and rear windows block only UVB, leaving skin exposed to UVA. It also says clear window film can block 99 percent of UV light, and that darker tints don't protect against UV any better than clear UV-protective film. Heat is a separate question. Ceramic film rejects the most heat for a given darkness, and our post on carbon vs ceramic window tint goes through that.

The windshield glare is a glass and visor job

AAA's tips for driving into the sun are plain: make sure the windshield is clean on the inside and out, use the sun visor, wear polarized sunglasses, keep papers and other things off the dashboard and leave more following room. The inside of the glass is the part people skip, and any haze on it shows up badly once low sun hits it. Glass gets cleaned inside and out as part of an interior and exterior detail.

So in Ballston Spa the setup that works is a clean windshield, a darker rear window where the law allows it, a legal film on the front sides for UV and heat, and sunglasses in the car from November on. The window tinting in Saratoga Springs page covers film types, removal of old tint and curing.

Common questions

Start here for the practical questions that come up most often.

Can I tint my windshield in New York?

Only a strip along the top. Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 375 allows material below 70% light transmittance on the uppermost six inches of the windshield. The rest has to let at least 70% of outside light through.

Will legal tint on my front windows stop low sun glare?

Only a little. New York requires at least 70% of outside light through the front side windows, and in Ballston Spa the low December sun mostly comes in through the windshield, which has to stay at 70% below the top six inches.

Can the rear window be darker than 70% in New York?

Yes, if the vehicle has outside rear-view mirrors on both sides. The DMV says the 70% rule applies to the rear window unless the vehicle has mirrors on both sides.

Does darker tint block more UV than clear film?

The Skin Cancer Foundation says darker tints do not protect against UV rays any better than clear UV-protective film, which can block 99 percent of UV light.

How much does window tinting cost in Ballston Spa?

Upstate Auto Detailing prices window tinting by quote. The vehicle, the windows being done, the film and whether old tint has to come off all change the job.
